"Until Yous Come up Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" is a song written by Morris Broadnax, Clarence Paul, and Stevie Wonder. The song was originally recorded by Stevie Wonder in 1967, but his version was not released as a single and did not announced on an anthology until 1977'south anthology Looking Back. The best-known version of this song is the 1973 release by Aretha Franklin, who had a million-selling summit 10 striking on Billboard charts. The vocal reached No. 1 on the R&B chart and No. 3 on the Hot 100 chart in 1974.[ane] It became an RIAA Gold record.[ii]

With this pinnacle at number three, Franklin became the beginning artist in the history of the Hot 100 chart to have a hitting song peak at each position from 1 to ten on the nautical chart. To date, only four other artists have achieved this feat: Marvin Gaye in 1983, Madonna in 1996, Drake in 2013, and Taylor Swift in 2015. Aretha'due south version of the song was ranked by Billboard equally the No. xi song for 1974.[3]

In the lyrics, the singer has been abandoned by a former partner, but declares determination to contact and win the partner back. Yet there is also show that the vocalist may be naive. The lyrics begin "Although you don't phone call anymore, I sit down and look in vain." The singer plans some drastic steps, including camping by the partner's steps, rapping on the door and tapping on the window pane. All the same, the mood of the vocal and its musical accompaniment is upbeat and optimistic.

Miki Howard recorded the song for her 1989 self-titled album. Her version was an R&B hit in 1990 when it peaked at No. three on Billboard'due south Hot Blackness Singles chart. Marker Romanek directed the video for Howard's rendition.[xv]

  • In 1983, Leo Sayer featured a embrace on his anthology Have You Ever Been in Dearest, and released information technology every bit a single, titled "Till You lot Come Back to Me". It reached no. 51 in the UK.[19]
  • The vocal was over again covered in 1983 by Luther Vandross who released information technology on his album Busy Torso as part of a medley with "Superstar", also every bit its closing track.
